Fly or Drive to Oakland from Orange County?

I have to attend training in Oakland for five days. Wondering if I should take my car up there so I'll be able to take in the city sights and have something to do after my training sessions. How is the drive from Orange County to Oakland? Is it safe and easy? I'm a female and will most likely have to travel alone up to Oakland. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!
