Why do people insist on typing short hand on the internet?

Like using u instead of you and r instead of are. It makes people look incredibly unintelligent and it personally makes me furious. The internet is not an excuse to type like you have no brain. Though, I do tend to excuse typos and sometimes, people who are learning this language when it comes to spelling.
